10 DAYS OF LIGHTNESS

10 DAYS OF LIGHTNESS BY ERLANDS & BAI BAI

Meditative art & movement 10 day performance

  • Dear Lake Como Design Festival Organizers,

We would like to present a collaborative submission from the designer/artist Erlands (erlandsart) and the glass artist/designer BAI BAI (baibaglass) for your consideration in the upcoming festival.

Together, we propose an extraordinary 10-day meditative art and body performance "10 DAYS INTO LIGHTNESS," as a way to present EB light objects with a transformative exploration of space, mind, and body that aligns with the thematic focus of the festival.

  • 1. Lighten the Space:

Erlands and BAI BAI aim to revolutionize our perception of space, a theme that resonates deeply with the ethos of the Lake Como Design Festival. By seamlessly integrating functionality and artistry, they seek to create an environment that transcends traditional boundaries, fostering a sense of lightness. Through our collaborative efforts, we invite viewers to reimagine their relationship with space and cultivate a new language of harmony.

    2. Lightness in Mind:

In the spirit of the festival's commitment to fostering intellectual exploration, Erlands and BAI BAI weave together design and art objects within the performance space to stimulate profound connections in the observer's mind. Collaborations with fellow artists and designers enhance the immersive experience, encouraging participants to explore new pathways of thought and embrace a mindset of openness and creativity.

    For example:

Collaborating with artist BAI BAI (BaibaGlass) to make body-transforming light art objects.

Connecting with the designer Agne Ellere to integrate an innovative method that connects the light to our body by displaying our heartbeats. Which will connect us showing the pulse of our mood and calmness.

Inviting Cedric Etienne to display sets of furniture where artists can organize the space to display objects, rest and meditate.

    3. Lightness in Body:

Erlands' inhabitation of the performance space for the duration of the festival embodies the festival's dedication to performative art. Through live streaming, audiences will have the opportunity to observe Erlands' physical and emotional journey in real-time, as the body becomes a canvas for expression and daily flow. BAI BAI's glass art objects serve as catalysts for physical and emotional transformation, illuminating the interplay between body and environment in a manner that resonates deeply with the festival's exploration of human-centered design.

  • 1. Subtracting Weight:
The project embodies the essence of subtracting weight, not only in its materiality but also in its conceptual framework. By redefining the relationship between objects and space, Erlands and BAI BAI empty the space from the unnecessary, creating a language of lightness that transcends physicality. Their innovative approach to design not only reduces the environmental impact but also elevates the aesthetic and functional aspects of their creations.

    2. Agile Objects:
Through, Erlands and BAI BAI introduce a new paradigm of agility in design. Their multi-functional, transformative objects seamlessly adapt to different contexts, offering versatility and dynamism. By integrating innovative technologies and interactive elements, they invite viewers to actively engage with their creations, fostering a deeper connection between form and function.

    3. Spaces of Light:
At the heart of EB lies the concept of spaces of light, where illumination transcends its utilitarian purpose to become a source of immersive experience. Erlands and BAI BAI's installations evoke visual epiphanies, blurring the boundaries between the physical and the metaphysical. By harnessing the power of light to evoke emotions and spark contemplation, they invite viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery and transformation.

  • The meticulously designed performance space accommodates a range of activities, including meditation, training, movement, painting, and relaxation.

The artist and his work are pleased in a transparent structure (greenhouse or open-air space) that provides visibility from all angles, creating an immersive experience that blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors.

Collaborative installations with fellow artists and designers enrich the atmosphere, offering opportunities for dynamic interaction and sensory exploration.

  • Erlands will spend 10 days (1 day installation and 9 days exhibition)

In a space selected by LCDF organizers. To Interact with the EB collection 3 lights and other objects in the location.

To create a performance artist would need a separate space where to:

Meditate in silence as part of the Vipassana meditation practice.

Move and train his body with a deep connection with his surroundings.

Interact with his own and include other artists/designers to display their objects in the space.

For example, collaborating with previous year participants:

(aligned) Artist BAI BAI (baibaglass) to make body-transforming light art objects.

(unaligned) Designer Cedric Etienne (cedric___etienne) to display sets of furniture where artists can organize the space to display objects, rest and meditate.

Paint the experiences from interactions with design/art objects. And emotions provoked in this unique environment of greenhouse or open-air space.

He is using his author technique and presents artworks on transparent fabric.

Creating a way of lighter living that is open for visitors at the location and streamed 24-7 online. To give the possibility to experience the happening live worldwide.

  • Building upon this initial exploration, in May 2023, I embarked on a meditative art performance that combined the practice of Vipassana meditation with the act of painting. Hosted at the Agenskalna market Greenhouse in Riga, Latvia.

Finding a right place only 3 days before opening, do to the long timelines in art galleries and unneeded expenses in empty storefronts in Riga. Gave no time to prepare or predict the space and its arrangement.

  • this 10-day silent meditation and artistic expression endeavor pushed the boundaries of self-expression and vulnerability.

It was during this period that I realized the transformative power of placing oneself in uncomfortable situations and confronting inner fears.

This period I found a fluid day rhythm. From waking before sunrise with meditation, painting, house care, and reflection time.

And every net day showed me new path how to immerse in this day cycle and create a beautiful experience for visitors and viewers online.
