FOLDBOOK is a refillable sketchbook and curation tool designed by ERLANDS.
It is built around a single-piece stainless-steel holder that keeps the paper securely in place without punched holes, rings or permanent binding.
FOLDBOOK supports standard A6, A5, A4 and A3 paper formats and allows users to choose different papers according to their needs. Pages can be added, removed, rearranged and archived as projects and ideas develop.
The holder stays. The paper changes.
-
FOLDBOOK holds paper through the shape and tension of its stainless-steel holder rather than through punched holes, rings, glue or permanent binding.
Paper is inserted with a simple gesture: gently bend the sheet and place it into the holder.
The paper remains intact, allowing individual sheets to be removed, reorganised, archived or used elsewhere.
-
Yes. Reconfiguration is one of the fundamental principles of FOLDBOOK.
Pages can be added, removed, moved between projects, grouped into sections or reorganised as an idea develops.
This allows FOLDBOOK to function as a curated composition as well as a sketchbook.
Ideas do not always develop chronologically, and FOLDBOOK is designed to accommodate that.
-
FOLDBOOK supports standard international paper sizes:
A6 · A5 · A4 · A3
You are not limited to a proprietary paper system. Different paper weights, textures, colours and brands can be selected according to your workflow.
Other papers can also be folded or adapted to fit the corresponding format.
-
Yes.
FOLDBOOK is intentionally open to standard paper available anywhere in the world.
You can use paper from different brands, projects or sources, depending on what you are doing. A sheet can be written on, drawn on, printed, folded or adapted and then become part of your FOLDBOOK.
Paper improves the system rather than adapting to it.
-
Yes. FOLDBOOK is designed so that the paper can be replaced while the stainless-steel holder remains in use.
When pages are filled, they can be removed and archived, while fresh paper is placed into the holder.
This allows the same FOLDBOOK to continue through many sets of pages and many different projects.
-
FOLDBOOK holds approximately 10–15 sheets, including the cover, depending on paper thickness.
The limited capacity is intentional. Rather than carrying an entire archive, FOLDBOOK is designed to hold the information and ideas that are most relevant to the current stage of your work.
Completed pages can then be archived separately and returned to the FOLDBOOK when needed.
-
The chain is an optional external accessory for additional securing or closure.
It is not required for the core functionality of FOLDBOOK. The stainless-steel holder itself is the primary system that secures the paper.
-
The permanent holder is made from stainless steel, selected for its strength, corrosion resistance and long-term durability.
Its elongated, slightly triangular geometry provides structural strength, while its weight gives FOLDBOOK stability and allows it to stand vertically.
The holder has a textured surface designed to be pleasant to handle and help minimise visible scratches and markings over time.
-
Yes.
The rear of the stainless-steel holder incorporates discreetly engraved centimetre markings along its length.
Additional markings indicate paper positioning for the corresponding paper formats.
This turns the holder into a measuring tool that is always available without adding another object to the creative workspace.
-
There is no visible logo on the exterior of the holder.
Instead, the stainless-steel holder carries a discreet engraving inside: FOLDBOOK BY ERLANDS
It also contains a unique identifier for edition and authenticity.
Once the paper is inserted, these markings disappear from view.
-
The pages do not have to be discarded or remain permanently inside the sketchbook.
Completed pages can be removed and transferred into the accompanying folder for archiving. The folder can also hold unused paper and material that may become relevant again later.
Fresh paper can then be placed into the holder.
This creates a continuous cycle between active work and archive.
-
Most sketchbooks are fixed objects. Their format, binding, sequence and paper are predetermined.
FOLDBOOK separates the permanent structure from the changing contents.
The holder remains while pages and covers can be replaced, rearranged and archived. Different paper formats and types can be introduced according to the user's needs.
This makes FOLDBOOK less like a conventional bound sketchbook and more like an open analogue workspace that can be curated over time.
-
Sustainability is built into the structure of FOLDBOOK rather than added as a separate feature.
The stainless-steel holder is designed for long-term use while paper and, when necessary, covers can be replaced.
This means the complete object does not need to be discarded when the pages are full.
The accompanying folders also become part of the system, allowing completed work and unused material to be stored rather than unnecessarily discarded.
The principle is simple:
Keep the durable part. Replace only what needs replacing.
-
FOLDBOOK is designed for people who develop, organise and communicate ideas through physical interaction with paper.
It can be used by artists, architects, designers, writers, engineers, students, researchers and creative professionals.
It can be used for sketching, writing, planning, collecting references, developing projects or organising completed work.
There is no prescribed way to use it.
FOLDBOOK adapts to its owner.
-
FOLDBOOK was designed by ERLANDS.
The idea began in 2016 while ERLANDS was working across interior and product design, branding and art. The need to work with different paper sizes, formats and surfaces led to the development of a system that could remain open while still providing structure.
The design evolved through approximately ten years of development and daily use.
FOLDBOOK launches in 2026, exactly ten years after the original idea began.
Today, it represents the physical starting point of ERLANDS' creative practice.
